Ray Home Revamp:  Attn. brought by Wendy Gorie, President of bahfh.org

Notes from Mitchell 3/20/08

Living Word Church spends their Sunday at Ms. Ray's house clearing the lawn and backyard of debris, repairing fences, replacing facia and window trim, and painting.  (See slideshow below).

Notes from Mitchell 2/12/08:
Good News:  Living Word Church, a new non-denominational church in League City has stepped forward and will be assisting Ms. Ray in helping to restore her home.  I hope to post pictures of servants in action as it occurs.

Notes from Mitchell 1/5/08:

Ms. Ray is in one of the original Habitat homes.  She is a grandmother, has cancer, yets still works as a maid and doesn't have the resources to maintain the exterior.  She takes care of a number of grandchildren at various times.

Mitchell went out on 1/5/08 with Wendy to assess the exterior condition of the home.

Probably needs some facia, and window and door trim replaced.  I recommend hardie trim that will never need replacement.  It's concrete fiber, but it cuts like wood.

The siding is the old press board material.  It is fairly solid but the paint has come off.  Perhaps wiring brushing the loose paint, repainting with Kilz2 Primer sealer, and a good exterior coat of paint will freshen up the house.  I recommend Thompson water seal sprayed at the underside of the bottom lap to extend the life of the press board siding.  Rain and dew will hang of the bottom edge and once the integrity of the press board is broken and water seeps in, it turns to saw dust.

The trim boards on the back and front doors need attention and painting.  Again, recommend Hardie Trim.

The back door threshold is missing and there is a 1-2 inch gap.  I could see a red towel or rug shoved in at the base of the door to keep the weather out.

There is no central a/c, only window units.  The weather stripping should be checked thoroughly.

The yard could easily be cleared out and trimmed.

There are sections of fairly new fencing around the house, but I couldn't tell if the side fences were installed by the owner, or the neighbors.  There are large sections missing which sort of tells me that there may or may not have been any colloboration with neighbors (perhaps due to lack of funds, but I can't be certain.)  There were large pieces of corrigated metal placed as a barrier of some kind inside the property line so I was confused by that structure.  There were many of the fence boards at the back side fence were not "vertical" for some reason.

The fence section could be fixed, installed, and repositioned, once we know the full story behind the installation.

The Slideshow below shows the house BEFORE.

The two slideshows below show the house as Living Word Church members and associates help with clearing the yard, rebuilding fences, installing new Hardie Plank facia boards and window trim, as well as planting new plants.  This Sunday March 30, 2008 event was part of Living Word Church's Sunday service project where instead of meeting for service at a church, they take their church to the street and be of service to others.  (Fantastic Idea!)

The Galveston Daily News as well as KPRC Channel 2 News came by to interview the key plays and let the community know about the help given to Ms. Ray.

12/22/07 Notes from Mitchell:

Newly donated Generation One Building (2 weeks ago).

Fresh grey paint replacing "Pink" color.

Donated electrical and air conditioning.  Ready for electrical inspection.  Following electrical inspection, they will need volunteers to insulate and sheetrock, then float and tape.

Will be constructing a prayer room, kitchen, office, and large gathering room.

Recently fenced courtyard will be replaced with concrete.  Picnic tables and cook offs can happen here.

Target completion is to have facility ready for neighborhood SuperBowl Event for many local youth.
