Groundbreaking Ceremony for Dalia

Bay Area Habitat for Humanity has broken ground on Maple Street in La Marque, and Dalia’s Habitat home is underway!

Our hearts were bursting at the overwhelming support that Dalia and her family received from the community. With such a warm welcome from so many neighbors and loved ones, we are confident that Dalia’s journey to homeownership will be bright and filled with joy.

Alongside full home sponsor Wellby Financial, we invited the La Marque community to join us in welcoming Dalia and her family to the neighborhood. Despite a rainy day that pushed the event by one week, the weather was perfect on Monday, January 29, as everyone came together to kick off the construction for Dalia’s brand-new home!

Cars lined the streets of Maple Street and Shady Lane as community members joyously arrived on site to a large white tent. Numerous Wellby Financial team members poured in with huge smiles, including Marty Pell, President & CEO of Wellby Financial, and Deborah Conder, Board Chair of Wellby Financial.

Mayor Keith Bell and City Councilman James Ross mingled with the many La Marque neighbors and excitedly discussed future Habitat builds in La Marque with Bay Area Habitat for Humanity board members. Amongst many of Dalia’s church members, family, and friends, we were additionally joined by Alex Getty of the La Marque Economic Development Corporation and our local chambers of commerce from League City, Clear Lake Area, and Texas City-La Marque.

Interim Executive Director Megan Scheffer presented welcoming remarks to the large crowd of Dalia’s supporters, and Board President Greg Goodman lead a heartwarming prayer to start the ceremony. From there, the talented Oliver Lampson of Clear Lake Highschool performed the National Anthem by trumpet.

Megan then introduced Dalia. With gratitude and excitement, Dalia thanked God, Bay Area Habitat for Humanity, Wellby Financial, and all who have come to support her. Dalia’s children sat front row, beaming at their mother with love and admiration. Mayor Keith Bell emphasized Dalia’s achievements and praised her story as the American Dream, and Marty Pell spoke words of encouragement and warmed hearts when he said, “Dalia, welcome home.”

Board President Melba Anderson of the Texas City ISD shared a warm embrace with Dalia after a heartfelt blessing of the ground given by Pastor Ingrid Clark of First United Methodist Church of La Marque. Dalia’s employers from H-E-B shined with pride as they cheered on Dalia throughout the ceremony and generously donated delicious sandwiches and a King’s Cake for our reception.

Board Treasurer Haley Svrcek closed out the ceremony by sharing her own experiences on Maple Street as she grew up across the street from the lot where Dalia’s home will be built. Lastly, Construction Project Manager Charles Broussard encouraged all to stay tuned as the build begins!

We were blown away by the impressive turnout at this event, and we are so grateful for the support shown to Dalia, her family, and Bay Area Habitat for Humanity. Every Habitat build is more than just a house. We are building homes and community! This home will provide a safe, secure haven for Dalia’s family to plan for their futures, make happy memories, and pass on from one generation to the next.

A huge thank you to all who joined us and thank you to Dalia and her family for allowing us to celebrate with you!
