Harvest of Hope: A Morning of Gratitude, Inspiration, and Community
There’s no better way to begin the day than with the warmth and spirit of Bay Area Habitat for Humanity’s Annual Community Breakfast!
On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, we gathered at the beautiful Lakewood Yacht Club for our “Harvest of Hope” event, welcoming nearly 150 passionate advocates for affordable housing. As the sun gently rose over the marina, our guests were treated to a delicious breakfast, kicking off a meaningful morning that united our community in support of a shared mission.
A Warm Welcome and Powerful Messages
The event began with a heartfelt welcome from Haley Svrcek, BAHFH Board Treasurer and Event Co-Chair. She set the tone for the morning, followed by the National Anthem, performed by Anthony Procopio, and a thoughtful invocation from Greg Goodman, BAHFH Board President.
Executive Director Megan Scheffer then took the stage, opening her remarks by recognizing a few of the cities we proudly serve, La Porte, La Marque, and Dickinson, and the city representatives in attendance. Megan expressed her deep gratitude to our Nail Gunner for their unwavering support and emphasized the significance of our mission to provide affordable housing solutions. She also introduced the 2024 Year in Review video, showcasing key milestones from the past year, including the completion of two affordable homes and groundbreaking for two more.
Stories of Hope and Resilience
One of the most moving moments of the morning was hearing from Rocio, an inspiring future homeowner in La Porte. Rocio shared her heartfelt story of perseverance in the face of unaffordable housing, and her dreams of creating a stable, loving home for her daughters. Her words underscored the transformative power of homeownership and the importance of community support.
Celebrating Our Sponsors and Partners
We were honored to recognize the incredible sponsors who make our work possible. John Basil, BAHFH Board Member, invited each 2024 home sponsor to the stage to receive a well-deserved certificate of appreciation. As the program came to a close, Elaina Polsen, Board Vice President, left us with inspiring closing remarks. She also highlighted a heartwarming detail from the event—a drawing made by a Habitat family’s three-year-old son, featuring his future home, which was officially dedicated just nine days after the breakfast.
Closing with Gratitude and a Bright Outlook
The morning wrapped up with a brief Q&A session led by Megan Scheffer, followed by warm conversations and a strong sense of community among all in attendance.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to every success of this year. Your belief in our mission to build homes, communities, and hope in the Texas Gulf Coast fuels everything we do. Together, we’re building brighter futures—let’s keep building!
